Meet Darius James and Ballet Cymru
Darius James |
Although it is still quire small, Ballet Cymru is one of our best companies. The company will perform its new ballet Ballet Cymru | A Child’s Christmas, Poems and Tiger Eggs by Dylan Thomas at the Stanley and Audrey Burton Theatre on 29 Nov 2018 and present a workshop for local adult dance students at Yorkshire Dance between 18:00 and 19:30 on 28 Nov 2018.
The founder, artistic director and one of the principal choreographers of Ballet Cymru is Darius James. Darius and Amy Doughty have created some of the best ballets I have ever seen in nearly 60 years of ballet going. Their Cinderella was my ballet of the year in 2015 and the runner-up was TIR which they also made.
Darius and his company will be guests at a reception that we are throwing for them between 19:30 and 21:00 in Martha's Room at Yorkshire Dance immediately after the workshop. If you have signed up for the workshop we hope you can stay for the party. If you have not yet signed up for the workshop but would like to do so you can register here. If you can't make the workshop but would still like to meet Darius and his artists you can join us in Martha's room at 19:30 if you register here,
Darius is one of the Vice-Presidents of The London Ballet Circle which describes itself as a charity that provides financial support to student dancers by hosting events such as talks by dancers, choreographers and company directors. Its aim is "to promote interest in dance (not just ballet) and associated arts by arranging a broad range of talks by dancers, choreographers and artistic directors; organising visits to the country's top ballet schools and hosting private tours of major exhibitions related to dance."
Our aim is also to support dance and dancers of all ages and levels of ability. We already do a lot of that through our company classes and rehearsals. Not everybody who shares our aim wants or is able to dance. As we want to welcome everyone who shares our aim into our company too we will launch our Powerhouse Ballet Circle at the reception.
This first event will be free but there will be a small charge for future meetings. The London Ballet Circle charges £5 to those who pay the annual subscription of £12 and £8 to everyone else. We shall probably do the same. Over the years we hope to raise enough to support ballet charities in our region and elsewhere.
Even if you can's attend our launch event we hope to see you at some of our others.
